National Science Week Activity Ideas
National Science Week will be celebrated next week from14 - 22 August. The theme this year is Food: Different By Design. This ties in with the United Nations International Year of Fruits and Vegetables as well as the International Year Of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development.
There are many ways that schools can get involved. This includes organising;
a Science Fair - where you invite families. If your school is in lockdown you may like to organise something online.
a school display
a collection of science books for sale in the library
students completing science challenges
a classroom tour if possible
a guessing competition
When choosing how you will celebrate it in your school, make sure to think ‘fun and as hands-on as possible. It should be showing off the science in the school and encouraging others to try and get involved in more science.
This may involve students;
making a volcano
watering celery with different coloured water
doing the bouncy egg experiment
making a paper plane that will fly more than two metres
trying to get choc chips out of a cookie
investigating the process from foods from paddock to plate
making a lava lamp
doing experiments such as making slime or sherbet
inviting high school students to the school to show off some science they are learning
showing off the technology within the school like bee bots, or 3D printers
visiting the vegetable garden
using batteries and lights to make a circuit
